The Local Area

Carmarthen is reputed to be the birth place of the legendary wizard Merlin and has the distinction of being Wales' oldest town. It stands on a bluff above the River Towy which runs from the Black Mountains down into Carmarthen Bay. Nearby the National Botanical Garden of Wales and the historic Aberglasney Gardens are well worth a visit, as well as the many majestic mediaeval castles which dominate the landscape of West Wales. Pemberton's Chocolate Farm attracts those with a sweet tooth while the young at heart visit Oakwood Theme Park. The town itself has a large leisure centre and the area offers a choice of golf courses, river and lake fishing, walking and rambling and areas of outstanding beauty.
