Royal St David's Golf Club
The Course
Under the stern gaze of Harlech's mighty castle, Royal St. David's links course occupies the dune land between the rugged hillside and the Irish Sea with the majestic Snowdonian Mountains adding a dramatic backdrop. The view seaward from the 16th tee, affords magnificent vistas of the Llyn peninsular across Tremadog Bay. The course is noted for a succession of long testing par fours plus five short holes, which vary in length and direction, with large, true greens a feature. The bunker free par four 15th is featured in the book, the '500 World's Greatest Golf Holes'; it requires a long carry across dunes from an elevated tee to a narrow fairway, Mount Snowdon is in the distance. A decent drive leaves a partially blind approach shot to a raised green nestling between sand dunes.
Only twice do successive holes proceed the same direction so the wind invariably spreads trouble among the dunes and although it is not long, it has been described by professionals as the world's toughest par 69. Royal St. David's is selected by Golf World as the Best Course in the British Isles with a green fee of less than £50 and you will miss out on something very special if you don't come and play it.
