Carmarthen Golf Club
The Course
Three miles or so up the Gwili Valley from Carmarthen, amid some of the choicest Welsh countryside, the town's golf club has considerably enhanced its outlook by building another storey on top of the clubhouse. The result is a magnificent lounge and dining room with clear views over even more stunning scenery.A friendly members course that one would never grow tired of playing. Every hole throws a problem at you that could lead to a bogey. Some of the greens slope away from the fairway making the run-up approach not only prudent but necessary. Another couple of greens belie their true nature due to optical illusion with the surrounding terrain. What appears uphill is the opposite - havoc on your putting stats!
The first hole at 420 yards, mostly uphill, is a stern start and the par four 17th at 375 yards may well be the toughest par four under 400 yards in the U.K. Only a long straight drive into the prevailing wind permits an open shot to the green, tall trees at the dogleg otherwise blocking you out.
Few manage to break 70 here - perhaps they've improved the view from the bar as a consolation to all who try.
